Ever since I was a young boy I've always been practical, inquisitive and interested in how things work. I used to help my dad with DIY projects around the house, renovating my childhood home which never seemed to end.
When I was 23 I followed in my fathers footsteps, and many of my family before me and joined the Royal Marines where I completed Commando training as 1 of only 14 of the original recruits of the 56 who started. I served on operations in Iraq & Afghanistan before leaving in 2010.
I fell into Project Management when I left the military, it seemed only natural with my disciplined, methodical and analytical personality. I worked for a number of small companies before entering the corporate world as a freelance contractor in 2015, working for large corporations, helping them deliver complex programmes in many sectors including legal, telecoms and finance. That's me at the back working for NHS Digital, with my team during an off-site meeting back in 2018
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I purchased a property and carried out a full renovation from top to bottom, inside and out. During that time, I worked with almost every trade imaginable, from joiners and tilers to builders, plasterers and gas engineers.
What stood out above everything else was the poor communication, lack of reliability and attention to detail. The number of times I was let down by 'no-shows' or late arrivals and the amount of poor workmanship I encountered was staggering.
I had a clear goal of what I wanted to achieve and when, but even with my background in the military and project management, nothing could have prepared me for the experience. It was a stressful and anxious time to say the least.
So, in 2025 after 10 years managing projects in the corporate and the scars I bore dealing with trades people, I decided to retrain as a Gas Engineer, but with a difference. I wanted to do things differently.
I had a vision, to set myself apart from the competition. I would put customers at the heart of everything I do, providing value for money, excellent communication and above all else, reliability. That's why my values of Honesty, Reliability and Respect are at the core of everything I do.
Bethy Boilers was founded in 2026, named after my partner Elisabeth 'Bethy' who supported me on my Journey to become a Gas Safe Registered Engineer.
